Stone Floors
Flagstones
Flagstone Floors can be found in properties as diverse as old crofters’ cottages, to manor houses and churches. Over the years we have worked in all of these and many more. Over time Flagstone floors become contaminated with bitumen, dirt, and various other products such as varnish. All these various contaminants prevent the stone from breathing, thereby causing delamination (flaking of the stone surface).
We use various specialist chemicals and mechanical aids to remove all the contaminants from your floor, thereby allowing the stone to naturally breathe again.
Terracotta Tiles
Terracotta tiles are made from natural clay and have been used for centuries for roof tiles, bricks, and floor tiles. As they are made from clay they can come in a vast array of colours from dark brown to reds and creams. Some tiles will contain all these colours.
Handmade terracotta tiles are produced in the same way today as they have been for hundreds of years, and are characterized by there uneven surfaces and slightly differing tile sizes.
Our cleaning and restoration process firstly involves the stripping off any old polish and sealers using specialist chemicals, followed by a deep mechanical cleaning of the tiles. Once again we then have to leave the floor to completely dry out – usually seven days, before returning to apply three coats of a quality breathable sealer and a natural wax finish.
Victorian Geometric Tiles
Tiled floors became unfashionable during the 1970s and 1980s, most were simply covered with carpet or vinyl flooring. If you own a victorian property check under existing flooring for these beautiful period features. We offer a full cleaning and restoration service to bring these stunning floors back to there original glory.
We can replace any damaged or cracked tiles with original salvaged materials or colour matched modern tiles. Any loose tiles can be carefully lifted and reset, followed by regrouting where necessary. The floor is then thoroughly cleaned to remove any ingrained dirt and old sealants. The floor must then be left to dry completely before we return to apply a breathable sealer and a quality wax finish.
Other Stone Surfaces
We also offer a full cleaning and restoration service to many other types of stone flooring, including Limestone, Travertine, Slate, and many more. If you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact us for friendly helpful advice.
Wooden floors
There are few things more beautiful than a wooden floor. Over many years we have used our knowledge and expertise to transform a vast array of timber floors. Whatever your floor condition we can repair, sand, and use a variety of quality lacquers, oils, and waxes to deliver you the floor of your dreams.
Parquet Floors
Parquetry, as a word, is derived from the French word ‘ parqueterie ‘. The laying of parquet flooring is called parquetry, an art that goes back some centuries and was first used in France in 1864 in the Palace of Versailles.
There are several parquetry patterns, the most commonly used in the U.K being the Herringbone pattern. In those days parquet floors adhered to the floor with hot bitumen, but today modern cold adhesives are used.
A variety of are used for making parquet blocks, the majority of which are oak, walnut, cherry, lime pine, and maple, although teak, mahogany, and ebony were used, these rare woods now have to be sourced from sustainably managed forests, and as they are so slow-growing they will always remain rare and expensive.
Floorboards
There are many different types of floorboards in a variety of different widths and lengths. They can be pine, oak, maple, and many other hard and softwoods. Many period properties will have floorboard floors, many of which are carpeted over. In more modern properties many developers use timber floors as a feature in the house, unfortunately, many of these more modern floors have either been oiled or lacquered with a substandard product meaning these floors tend to mark and scratch easily.
Whatever type of boards you may have, we have the knowledge and experience to bring them back to there original beauty. We can source reclaimed boards to replace and repair any damaged or missing boards, and offer gap filling if the boards have gaps between them.
